Brigantine is an island town/city in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States.

The region was originally incorporated as Brigantine Beach Borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on June 14, 1890, from portions of Galloway Township, based on the results of a popular vote held on June 3, 1890.

On April 23, 1897, the region was reincorporated as the City of Brigantine City.

On March 16, 1924, Brigantine was incorporated as a city, replacing East Atlantic City and incorporating further portions of Galloway Township. The borough was titled for the many shipwrecks in the area, including those of brigantines. New Jersey Monthly periodical ranked Brigantine as its 36th best place to live in its 2008 rankings of the "Best Places To Live" in New Jersey. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city had a total region of 10.364 square miles (26.844 km2), including 6.387 square miles (16.543 km2) of territory and 3.977 square miles (10.301 km2) of water (38.37%). Brigantine is positioned on Brigantine Island.

The only road to and from Brigantine is New Jersey Route 87, locally known as Brigantine Boulevard.

Since 1989, the City of Brigantine has been governed inside the Faulkner Act (formally known as the Optional Municipal Charter Law) under the Council-Manager form (Plan 5), implemented by direct petition effective as of January 1, 1991. The town/city is governed by a City Council consisting of a Mayor (elected at large), two at-large Council members and four ward council members, all of whom serve terms of office of four years.

Members of the City Council are Karen Bew (Ward 1; R, 2016, appointed to serve an unexpired term), Rick De - Lucry (Ward 4; D, 2016), Lisa Mc - Clay (Ward 2; D, 2016), John Withers, IV (Ward 3; D, 2016 - appointed to fill an unexpired term), Vincent Sera (at-large; R, 2018) and Andrew C.

Brigantine is positioned in the 2nd Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 2nd state legislative district. New Jersey's Second Congressional District is represented by Frank Lo - Biondo (R, Ventnor City). New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Cory Booker (D, Newark, term ends 2021) and Bob Menendez (D, Paramus, 2019).

Brown (R, Ventnor City) and Vince Mazzeo (D, Northfield). The Governor of New Jersey is Chris Christie (R, Mendham Township). The Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey is Kim Guadagno (R, Monmouth Beach). The executive serves a four-year term and the freeholders are propel to staggered three-year terms, of which four are propel from the county on an at-large basis and five of the freeholders represent equally populated districts. As of 2015, Atlantic County's Executive is Republican Dennis Levinson, whose term of office ends December 31, 2015. Members of the Board of Chosen Freeholders are Chairman Frank D.

As of the 2011-12 school year, the district's two schools had an enrollment of 768 students and 68.9 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student teacher ratio of 11.15:1. Schools in the precinct (with 2011-12 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics) are Brigantine Elementary School serves grades Pre - K-4 (473 students) and Brigantine North Middle School serves grades 5-8 (295 students). Students in enhance school for ninth through twelfth grades, along with those from Longport, Margate City and Ventnor City, attend Atlantic City High School in neighboring Atlantic City, as part of sending/receiving relationships with the Atlantic City School District. As of the 2013-14 school year, the school had an enrollment of 2,005 students and 196.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student teacher ratio of 10.2:1. City enhance school students are also eligible to attend the Atlantic County Institute of Technology or the Charter-Tech High School for the Performing Arts, positioned in Somers Point. As of May 2010, the town/city had a total of 64.45 miles (103.72 km) of roadways, of which 60.54 miles (97.43 km) were maintained by the municipality, 3.74 miles (6.02 km) by Atlantic County, 0.06 miles (0.097 km) by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and 0.11 miles (0.18 km) by the South Jersey Transportation Authority.
