As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's populace was 11,842, reflecting an increase of 180 (+1.5%) from the 11,662 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 174 (+1.5%) from the 11,488 counted in the 1990 Census. An inner-ring suburb of New York City, Hasbrouck Heights is positioned approximately 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Midtown Manhattan and 8 miles (13 km) west of Upper Manhattan.

Hasbrouck Heights was formed by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on August 2, 1894, based on the passage of a popular vote on July 31, 1894, and was created from portions of Lodi Township at the height of the "Boroughitis" phenomenon then sweeping through Bergen County. A part of the borough was took in to Lodi in 1901. Hasbrouck of the New Jersey and New York Railroad. Hasbrouck Heights is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government.

The Borough Council consists of six members propel to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year in a three-year cycle. The Borough form of government used Hasbrouck Heights, the most common fitness used in the state, is a "weak mayor / strong council" government in which council members act as the legislative body with the mayor presiding at meetings and voting only in the event of a tie.

Hasbrouck Heights is positioned in the 9th Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 38th state legislative district. New Jersey's Ninth Congressional District is represented by Bill Pascrell (D, Paterson). New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Cory Booker (D, Newark, term ends 2021) and Bob Menendez (D, Paramus, 2019). Gordon (D, Fair Lawn) and in the General Assembly by Tim Eustace (D, Maywood) and Joseph Lagana (D, Paramus). The Governor of New Jersey is Chris Christie (R, Mendham Township). The Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey is Kim Guadagno (R, Monmouth Beach). Bergen County is governed by a directly propel County Executive, with legislative functions performed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. As of 2015, the County Executive is James J.

Tedesco III (D, Paramus; term ends December 31, 2018). The seven freeholders are propel at-large in partisan elections on a staggered basis, with two or three seats coming up for election each year, with a Chairman, Vice Chairman and Chairman Pro Tempore chose from among its members at a reorganization meeting held each January. Bergen County's Freeholders are Freeholder Chairwoman Joan Voss (D, 2017; Fort Lee), Vice Chairman Steve Tanelli (D, 2015; North Arlington) Chairman Pro Tempore John A.

The precinct also serves students from Teterboro, a non-operating precinct that was consolidated into the Hasbrouck Heights School District following its dissolution on July 1, 2010. As of the 2011-12 school year, the district's four schools had an enrollment of 1,758 students and 118.9 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student teacher ratio of 14.79:1. Schools in the precinct (with 2011-12 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics) include two K-5 elementary schools Euclid Elementary School (387 students; in grades K-5) and Lincoln Elementary School (446; Pre - K-5) Hasbrouck Heights Middle School for grades 6-8 (422) and Hasbrouck Heights High School for grades 9-12 (503). Public school students from the borough, and all of Bergen County, are eligible to attend the secondary education programs offered by the Bergen County Technical Schools, which include the Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, and the Bergen Tech ground in Teterboro or Paramus.

As of May 2010, the borough had a total of 36.64 miles (58.97 km) of roadways, of which 29.29 miles (47.14 km) were maintained by the municipality, 4.78 miles (7.69 km) by Bergen County and 2.57 miles (4.14 km) by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. Although the rail line's tracks lie entirely inside the borders of Hasbrouck Heights, and in fact form the borough's easterly boundary with Teterboro, New Jersey Transit considers the station to be in Teterboro because passenger boarding, passenger shelter, parking lot, and ingress/egress roads are accessed from that municipality. In January 2013, New Jersey Transit erected a 300-foot (91 m) chain link fence in the vicinity of the Williams Avenue dead end as a safety measure to prevent pedestrians / commuters from crossing over the tracks illegally to gain access to the trains on the Teterboro side.

Hasbrouck Heights Mayor Rose Marie Heck, Assemblyman Tim Eustace, and Hasbrouck Heights commuters have tried to work with New Jersey Transit to find alternative solutions, including installation of a pedestrian rail crossing with swing gates and warning lights.
