Mount Laurel was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 7, 1872, from portions of Evesham Township. The township was titled for a hill veiled with laurel trees. The Mount Laurel Decision is a judicial interpretation of the New Jersey State Constitution that requires municipalities to use their zoning powers in an affirmative manner to furnish a realistic opportunity for the manufacturing of housing affordable to low and moderate income homeholds.
Even though the poor black families in Mount Laurel were not from urban ghettos, and were not involved in gang activity, the new suburban influx thought otherwise, and decidedly delayed the creation of affordable housing areas, citing concerns of gang activeness and an influx of inner town/city criminals.
The Mount Laurel Baseball League and the Mount Laurel United Soccer Club play in the park's sports fields, and since 2008, the Mount Laurel Premiership. Mount Laurel voted to change its form of government in 1970 from a Township Committee form to a Faulkner Act fitness using the Council-Manager (Plan E), enacted based on the recommendations of a Charter Study Commission as of January 1, 1972. In this form of government, the Township Manager oversees the daily functions of the Township.
As of 2017, members of the Mount Laurel Township Council are Mayor Dennis Riley (R, term as Mayor ends December 31, 2017 and on council ends December 31, 2018), Deputy Mayor Richard Van Noord (R, term as Deputy Mayor ends December 31, 2017 and on council ends December 31, 2018 ), Linda Bobo (R, 2020), Irwin Edelson (R, 2020) and Kurt D.
Mount Laurel Township is positioned in the 3rd Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 7th state legislative district. Prior to the 2011 reapportionment following the 2010 Census, Mount Laurel Township had been in the 8th state legislative district. New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District is represented by Tom Mac - Arthur (R, Toms River). New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Cory Booker (D, Newark, term ends 2021) and Bob Menendez (D, Paramus, 2019).

The Mount Laurel Schools serve enhance school students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
As of the 2011-12 school year, the district's eight schools had an enrollment of 4,201 students and 329.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student teacher ratio of 12.77:1. Schools in the precinct (with 2011-12 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics) are Countryside Elementary School (grades Pre - K-4; 315 students), Fleetwood Elementary School (Pre - K-4; 362), Hillside Elementary School (K-4; 407), Larchmont Elementary School (Pre - K-4; 359), Parkway Elementary School (Pre - K-4; 410), Springville Elementary School (Pre - K-4; 466), Mount Laurel Hartford School for grades 5 & 6 (908 students) and Thomas E.
Harrington Middle School for grades 7 & 8 (974). Parkway Elementary School was one of four schools in New Jersey recognized by the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, awarded by the United States Department of Education, for the 2005 06 school year. Public school students from Mount Laurel in ninth through twelfth grades attend Lenape High School, positioned in Medford Township. As of the 2014-15 school year, the high school had an enrollment of 1,840 students and 150.7 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student teacher ratio of 12.2:1. Lenape High School is part of the Lenape Regional High School District, a county-wide secondary school precinct in Burlington County that also serves the municipalities of Evesham Township, Medford Lakes, Medford Township, Shamong Township, Southampton Township, Tabernacle Township and Woodland Township at its four high schools. Students from Mount Laurel Township, and from all of Burlington County, are eligible to attend the Burlington County Institute of Technology, a countywide enhance school precinct that serves the vocational and technical education needs of students at the high school and post-secondary level at its campuses in Medford and Westampton Township. As of May 2010, the township had a total of 170.19 miles (273.89 km) of roadways, of which 115.86 miles (186.46 km) were maintained by the municipality, 33.26 miles (53.53 km) by Burlington County and 13.55 miles (21.81 km) by the New Jersey Department of Transportation and 7.52 miles (12.10 km) by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. The New Jersey Turnpike passes through Mount Laurel Township, entering from Cherry Hill Township in the township's southwest corner and closing for about 7.5 miles (12.1 km) to Westampton Township at Mount Laurel's northern edge. The Turnpike's James Fenimore Cooper rest region is positioned between Interchanges 4 and 5 northbound at milepost 39.4. Mount Laurel also hosts the toll gate for Exit 4 of the Turnpike, which provides access to Route 73. Interstate 295 passes through the township, with three exits (Exit 36: Berlin/Tacony Bridge/Route 73, Exit 40: Moorestown/Mount Holly/Route 38, Exit 43: Delran/Rancocas Woods). Other primary thoroughfares through Mount Laurel are Route 38, Route 73 and County Route 537.
