Swedesboro was formed as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 9, 1902, from portions of Woolwich Township. The borough was titled for its early pioneer from Sweden. Old Swede's Church (Holy Trinity) in Swedesboro, New Jersey Swedesboro, along with Bridgeport, was one of only two settlements established in New Jersey as a part of the New Sweden colony.
Swedesboro is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government.
The Borough Council consists of six members propel to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year in a three-year cycle. The Borough form of government used by Swedesboro, the most common fitness used in the state, is a "weak mayor / strong council" government in which council members act as the legislative body with the mayor presiding at meetings and voting only in the event of a tie.
Swedesboro is positioned in the 2nd Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 3rd state legislative district. New Jersey's Second Congressional District is represented by Frank Lo - Biondo (R, Ventnor City). New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Cory Booker (D, Newark, term ends 2021) and Bob Menendez (D, Paramus, 2019).

Public school students in kindergarten through sixth undertaking attend the Swedesboro-Woolwich School District, a merged school precinct that serves students from both Swedesboro and Woolwich Township.
Public school students in seventh through twelfth grades are educated by the Kingsway Regional School District, which also serves students from East Greenwich Township, South Harrison Township and Woolwich Township, with the addition of students from Logan Township who attend as part of a sending/receiving relationship in which tuition is paid on a per-pupil basis by the Logan Township School District. As of the 2014-15 school year, the district's two schools had an enrollment of 2,544 students and 189.9 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student teacher ratio of 13.4:1. Schools in the precinct (with 2014-15 enrollment data from the National Center for Education Statistics) are Kingsway Regional Middle School with 876 students in grades 7-8 and Kingsway Regional High School with 1,668 students in grades 9-12. Under a 2011 proposal, Kingsway would merge with its constituent member's K-6 districts to turn into a full K-12 district, with various options for including Logan Township as part of the merged district. The southern portion to the Port of Salem is owned by Salem County and directed by the Southern Railroad of New Jersey and interchanges with Conrail's South Jersey/Philadelphia Shared Assets Area operations which travels north to Pavonia Yard at Camden.
